Activities of the Publications Center

1. The History and Structure of the Publications Center

The Institute’s Publications Center, along with striving to achieve the Institute’s goals, prints and publishes finished research (plans) of The Institute’s researchers and material on the topic of Islamic Science. Its activities started around the same time as the activities of the Research and Education departments.

It initially was just a section of the Institute, later to become an office of a management division of the Research Department. Now, it is the Publications Center of the Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute.

The Publications Center has two distribution centers, located in the capital of Tehran, and the holy city of Qom. It also consists of several sections for its various duties: editing, accounting, typing and publishing, and photocopying. Its bookstore has more than 1.000 different books on display and for sale.

A Summary of the Book Printing Procedure

Works of the professors, researchers, and students are published according to the priorities set in book printing. (They are given printing priority according to the nature of their content.) After obtaining approval and permission to print from the Book Council of the Publications Center, all works are prepared for the Book Printing Procedure. Printing priority is given in the following manner:

1. Finished research and compositions of the Research Department
2. Theses and other works at the Master’s and Doctorate levels
3. Works of the Institute’s researchers and professors
4. Other works (written) in relation to the scientific goals of the Institute

After obtaining approval from the Book Council, the works are given to the editing section of the Center for editing. First, all works are reviewed by the editing section. If they meet approval, they are then put through a three- part editing process. The first part of this editing process is technical, the second pertains to the content of the works and the third is related to their external and physical appearance. After this has been completed, they are given to the typing and publishing section to be typed and are once again given to the editing section for a final review. The author, him/herself, gives it that final review and then hands it back to the typing and publishing section for design. After the final editing and designing procedure is complete, it is prepared and sent for printing by the Director of the Publications Center. Let it be noted that all lithography, designing, printing, covering, etc… is done out of the Institute. When these procedures are finished, the covered completed books are sent off to the Distribution Centers (of the Publications Center ). The Distribution Centers give a 20% discount on large retail purchases. For individual resale in bookstores, a 10% discount is given. Another activity of the Distribution Centers is exchanging and trading the publications with those of others. This has been one of the most successful distributing activities that has been accomplished so far.
